When you give students a final that’s largely subjective, then they write essays in varying degrees of legibility that are largely subjective, then you realize you have to grade that shit.

Ironically, I was wondering where you’d been today. Haven’t seen you around here in a while.

I’ve been awful lately, because I’ve had a lot going on. I hope to spend much more time drunk on Oppo in the near future.

It’s weird when you realize the best defense against grade inflation isn’t grading fairly, but having students dumb enough to somehow manage to get a C when you’ve gone out of your way to give them pity As at every opportunity.

Wanna know a secret? Sometimes I just give people good marks because I have no idea what the fuck they wrote.

I remember thinking in college, “if this is illegible, I wonderful if I’ll get away with not knowing the answer.” I did not. But luckily, I’m pretty sure my own students are too dumb to be doing it on purpose.

I’ve changed jobs and have slowly ramped up my oppo activity again. How’s the Jag?

I got straight A’s in Government, and at the end of the year my professor said she couldn’t read any of my cursive.

Exactly why I never required anything hand-written on homework or exams.

My first teaching assignment as a grad student. The test was three essay questions on current topics of RNA enzymes. The professor had the two of us in to grade the exams. He said, “There are really no right answers because the topics are current research, and no one knows the answers. I’m looking for good arguments. Here you go. I’ll back you up whatever you give them. I’m going to my kid’s soccer game.” And with that, he pushed the pile over and left.

I was a second year grad student grading a first year grad student class. My feeling was pretty much yours. To the professor’s credit, he did back me up.
